[Breakthrough] Artificial Intelligence Takes Flight With Self Propelled Vehicles
In our previous post on the Breakthrough series, we featured the application of Soft Robotics in Deep Sea Exploration. Following the interest students expressed in our post, this week we have one regarding Artificial Intelligence. AI is the order of the day, and has opened up new avenues of career paths in almost every industry. It is all about automation and enhanced efficiency way beyond human capabilities. AI should not be perceived as a separate field of study, but as a multi-disciplinary field that when works alongside other industries, can work wonders. Here is an example of how AI is deployed in drones to map the environment and plan the best route for navigation, dodging obstacles.
Researchers from University of Zurich, Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence and NCCR Robotics together have designed an algorithm that identify trails and decide on the best ones for navigation without crashing. They used pre-recorded video footage of forest trails to teach the algorithm, which was able to accurately navigate new trails 85% of times. The next step in this research will be to teach it to detect humans. Though it has been tested on drones for a start, this algorithm could be applied to any vehicle to be used in a range of industries, like autonomous cars, search and rescue missions during catastrophes and even real-time maps on mobile devices and VR devices.
Identifying the best route based on obstacles is one way of seeing it. Another is the inverse; analyzing the free space around obstacles and drawing the best route. This approach was taken up by scientists at MIT to allow drones to change course of flight on the fly. MIT’s algorithm decided based on 12 different parameters that were constantly monitored and calculated upon. Few of them are, the drone’s exact location in space, speed and size. If evolved, this could also power commercial airlines too.
Artificial Intelligence and self-learning algorithms are not limited to robotics, though that is the common misconception. We believe Artificial Intelligence can be deployed in any field to interpret data and perform tasks humanly impossible.
